Abstract
A novel intense plastic straining which called Constrained Groove Pressing
(CGP) was used to improve microstructure and mechanical properties of
3003 aluminium alloy. Williamson-Hall method has been used to measuring
grain size on XRD patterns of deformed samples. The result show that ultra-fine
grained 3003 alloy having grain size of 582nm was successfully produced
by CGP at room temperature. Mechanical properties of sheet were which
examined by tensile testing, exhibited approximately 170% improvement
in comparison to annealed sample. Also comparing result to aluminium 1100
alloy confirmed the rapid rate of grain refinement and mechanical properties
improvement in 3003 alloy. This is attributed to presence of second phase
particles of Al6Mn in microstructure of studied alloy. Tensile testing
also demonstrated that work hardening rate of CGPed sheet decreased and
after pass three of process only one stage of work hardening is detectable.
